Join Lawrence Krauss, director of the Origins Project at ASU, as he welcomes Zachary Adam, recipient of the 2017 Origins Project Postdoctoral Lectureship Award.
Adam is a research associate at Harvard University in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the Harvard Origins Initiative. His research focuses on the broad theme of “Physicochemical automata and life’s origins,” which will be the basis for the talks he is scheduled to give during his time at ASU. In his public lecture, Energy, Entropy, and Complexity on the Prebiotic Earth, we will explore how different energy sources can drive different kinds of chemical transformations on the prebiotic Earth, and we will apply this knowledge to narrow down the kinds of environments where complex groups of organic compounds, predecessors to life, could have originated. In the course of our discussion, we will uncover geologic nuclear reactors, ancient organic machines, and the possibility that water-based life as we know it today arose within other, more exotic liquids.
