Aircraft need landing strips and this is a bit of a problem. Therefore, it has long been desirable to manufacture aircraft that can take-off vertically, so-called ‘vertical take-off and landing’ (VTOL) (not to be confused with VTVL :)) but it is no easy task to achieve this. Here we get some history behind VTOL, but also a lot of facts about the Harrier plan, which was able to pull this handy little trick, just as the modern F-35B, in the bonus clip.
