Robotically-assisted surgery was initially thought overcome the limitations of pre-existing minimally-invasive surgical procedures and to enhance the capabilities of surgeons performing open surgery.

Today’s surgical robots do extend a surgeon’s capacities; filtering out hand tremors and allow maneuvers that even the best surgeon couldn’t pull off with laparoscopic surgery’s typical long-handled tools. But as pointed out by IEEE Spectrum in this video; tomorrow’s robot surgeons will take over the operating room.
